Overview of ASQ Retail methodology
Who is surveyed?
Departing passengers are interviewed at the gate prior to boarding their flight, while the full retail experience is still immediate in their mind. To ensure representative results, each airport is issued with a sample plan structured to reflect operations at their airport and showing the number of passengers to survey on each flight. Participating airports are required to follow these sample plans for their fieldwork.
Frequency of survey
Two waves of fieldwork are carried out each year in Q1 and Q3 in order to account for seasonal variations in the passenger mix. Interviewing takes place over the whole quarter.
Sample size
The minimum sample size per survey period is 1,000 interviews. This ensures that each airport has a sufficient sample size to perform detailed analysis of passenger profiles. Participating airports can request to increase their sample size if they wish to perform more in-depth analysis of the results.
Fieldwork procedure
The fieldwork methodology is similar to the ASQ Survey, meaning that it requires no additional training for the fieldwork staff. Paper questionnaires are distributed at the departure gate on selected flights. Once the passenger has completed the questionnaire it is collected by fieldwork staff and at the end of the survey period all completed questionnaires are returned to the ASQ team for analysis.
